The city of Carlisle, close to the Scottish - English border, is just a short drive away to the North. It is the main shopping centre for the northern half of Cumbria and much of southern Scotland.
In keeping with the rest of the area there is much of historical interest, including the Cathedral and a particularly well preserved Castle, which is also home to the Museum of the Border Regiment.
