Brougham Castle was built in the 13th century close to the site of an earlier Roman fort. It was intended to guard the crossing of the River Eamont. Various additions were made over the following century.

The castle, which was a major part of the defences against Scottish invaders, has a chequered history – falling into disrepair followed by restoration.

Today the castle is largely in ruins but the site houses an exhibition of nearby historical interest. - More…
